The music industry has totally changed over the past several years. Recently, I’ve been contemplating why I bother to create music… definitely not for fortune or fame! It really boils down to enjoying the creative process, which sometimes results in music that I enjoy listening to.
This leads to further pondering… what to do with all of the music I’ve created over the years? It would be nice to share online, but I don’t have the storage space on my website, and don’t feel like paying for more.
This question sent me on a mission to see what kind of online music services are available… something I haven’t done since the MP3.com days. There are many music hosting sites available, with vast differences in their approach and service. After searching and reading many forum posts I finally decided on SoundClick.
My first criteria is that that the service is free. Otherwise, I can just pay to upgrade my own site. Secondly, it would be nice to charge a small fee for downloads of my music, with free streaming of all tracks. SoundClick meets both criteria, although not perfectly.
One nice additional feature are the widgets… which allow the ability to embed (or even pop-up) a music player to stream my music, like the one above.
We’ll see how it works out over the next few months. I plan to slowly upload tracks to the site and see what happens.
